July Monarchy

The July Monarchy began after the Revolution of 1830 removed Charles X and placed Louis-Philippe on the throne as King of the French. The regime presented itself as a constitutional alternative to both Bourbon absolutism and republican revolution. Political power nevertheless remained concentrated among a relatively narrow electorate and the prosperous propertied classes.

The period mattered because banking, speculation, journalism and social display became increasingly visible sources of influence in public life. The government faced opposition from legitimists, Bonapartists and republicans, while rapid economic and urban change sharpened social tensions. Respectability and wealth could conceal political compromise, scandal and crimes committed under earlier regimes.

The later action of The Count of Monte Cristo unfolds in the Parisian society of the 1830s. Dumas uses aristocratic titles, banking fortunes, political careers and fashionable households to show how characters who prospered after Dantès’s imprisonment can be exposed through the institutions and ambitions of the July Monarchy.
