Louis-Philippe I

1773–1850

Louis-Philippe I was king of the French from 1830 to 1848 after the July Revolution. His constitutional monarchy rested on bourgeois support but collapsed during the revolutions of 1848.

Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables places Louis-Philippe I within a narrative shaped by social change and the pressures of ordinary life, family, marriage and personal loyalty, and political ambition and government.
