Alexander Cordell (1914–1997) was a British novelist best known for historical fiction set amid the industrial transformation of nineteenth-century Wales. Born George Alexander Graber in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, he spent part of his early life abroad before settling in Britain and serving in the British Army. After the Second World War he worked in industry and became closely acquainted with the landscapes and communities of South Wales that would dominate his fiction. Cordell developed a strong interest in the social history of the Welsh valleys, particularly the lives of ironworkers, miners and working-class families during the Industrial Revolution. His novels combine large-scale historical events with domestic drama, political conflict and a strong sense of place.

Cordell’s most famous work is the Mortymer Saga, beginning with The Rape of the Fair Country, which follows the Mortymer family against the growth of the iron industry and the harsh conditions endured by workers in early nineteenth-century Wales. The sequence continues through novels including The Hosts of Rebecca and Song of the Earth, bringing its characters into contact with events such as the Merthyr Rising of 1831, the Chartist movement, the Newport Rising of 1839 and the Rebecca Riots. Cordell also wrote numerous other historical novels, including Race of the Tiger, Beloved Exile and This Proud and Savage Land, often returning to themes of industrialisation, poverty, migration, social injustice and political resistance. His fiction is particularly effective at showing how major economic and political changes affected ordinary families, making the turbulent history of industrial Wales accessible through vigorous, dramatic storytelling.
