First Anglo-Afghan War
1839–1842 CE
British Indian forces invaded Afghanistan in 1839 to replace Dost Mohammad Khan with Shah Shuja, seeking a government thought more compatible with British strategic interests. Initial military success was followed by growing Afghan resistance, political crisis in Kabul and the collapse of the occupation.
The retreat from Kabul in January 1842 became one of the most famous disasters in British imperial military history. Mohammad Akbar Khan played a major role in resistance to the occupation, while Dost Mohammad later returned to power. The war is a central setting for Alexander Cordell’s Beloved Exile and Land of Heart’s Desire.
