A young Englishman becomes involved in the First Anglo-Afghan War as British forces attempt to replace Dost Mohammad Khan with Shah Shujah Durrani. The campaign carries him through Afghanistan's difficult terrain and into a political struggle in which promises made in distant capitals prove fragile once armies occupy Kabul.
As resistance grows, the apparent success of the invasion gives way to siege, uprising and retreat. The story follows military movement, survival and shifting local alliances while the British position collapses and Mohammad Akbar Khan emerges as one of the leading figures opposing the occupation.
