Cordell returns to Cardiff’s dockland communities in a collection of connected stories about the people of Tiger Bay and Bute Street. Dockers, boxers, priests, nuns, drinkers, sailors and families live in a district shaped by coal exports and maritime traffic, where ships bring both employment and a constantly changing population.
Rather than presenting the docks through industrial statistics, Cordell builds the history from anecdote, argument, humour and hardship. The multicultural character of Tiger Bay emerges from the movement of seafarers and migrants through one of Wales’s most important ports. The stories extend his industrial Welsh fiction into an urban and maritime setting where community identity is created by work, religion, sport and the everyday traffic of the docks.
