War of the First Coalition

1792–1797 CE

European monarchies entered war against Revolutionary France after the French Revolution destabilised the existing diplomatic order. Britain joined the coalition in 1793 and relied heavily on naval blockade, colonial operations and control of maritime trade.

The coalition fragmented as France defeated continental opponents, but the Royal Navy continued to operate globally. The war placed unprecedented pressure on British naval manpower and contributed to unrest over pay, food and conditions.

The opening Kydd novels begin within this conflict. Impressment, Atlantic voyages, Caribbean fighting and the fleet mutinies of 1797 establish the world in which Thomas Kydd learns to become a sailor.
