In 1793 Thomas Paine Kydd is taken by a press gang from his work as a Guildford wig-maker and sent aboard the ship of the line Duke William. He enters a closed world of watches, rigging, discipline and violence without the knowledge that even the lowest-rated sailor is expected to possess.
Friendship with the educated Nicholas Renzi helps Kydd survive while battle and storm reveal the skill beneath lower-deck routines. What begins as forced service becomes the discovery of an ability and identity that could carry him beyond the life from which he was seized.
