In November 1807 Kydd sails to Lisbon as French forces advance and the Portuguese royal family prepares to evacuate to Brazil. Amid the disorder he meets Persephone Lockwood again, reviving an attachment that seemed lost when duty separated them.
Back in Britain, court society and a rival suitor make marriage as difficult as any operation at sea. Temporary command of the royal yacht then places Kydd between the Prince of Wales and French privateers, forcing personal ambition to yield once more to responsibility.
