Jack Aubrey takes HMS Leopard toward New South Wales with convicts, officials and an American intelligence agent aboard. Stephen Maturin is charged with watching the prisoner while disease and divided loyalties spread through the crowded ship.
A powerful Dutch warship pursues the weakened Leopard into southern waters. The chase through storms and ice forces Jack to sacrifice ship and crew for survival, ending with refuge at remote Desolation Island.
The voyage becomes a test of command because Aubrey cannot solve every threat through naval combat. Disease reduces manpower, convicts and officials have conflicting priorities and the Dutch pursuit forces a damaged ship into seas where weather may be more dangerous than gunfire. Maturin’s intelligence responsibilities add another layer of secrecy to a crew already strained by isolation.
