In 1794, Captain Nicholas Cruwys brings the frigate Topaze home from the Mediterranean and prepares her for service with Lord Howe’s Channel Fleet. France is threatened by famine, a grain convoy is crossing the Atlantic, and the French fleet leaves Brest to protect it while British scouts search the ocean for both forces.

Cruwys must turn a new company into an effective crew during hard cruising off the French coast. When a sudden vacancy places him in command of a seventy-four-gun ship and six hundred unfamiliar men, he has only days to prepare them for the fleet action remembered as the Glorious First of June.
