In January 1783, while peace negotiations seek to end the American War of Independence, Nicholas Cruwys is temporarily outside Royal Navy service and commands the East India Company ship Ganges. His covert task is to intercept the heavily armed French merchantman Espérance before it can disrupt the China trade on which a substantial part of Britain’s eastern commerce depends.

The pursuit carries Ganges through distant ports, monsoon waters and dangerous reefs where the distinctions between commerce, private war and national policy are deliberately blurred. Faced with allies whose methods offend his sense of honour and opponents pursuing more than profit, Cruwys must decide how far necessity can justify actions that regular naval service would condemn.
