In 1784, the reduced Royal Navy struggles to protect Mediterranean trade with too few ships. Newly promoted Captain Nicholas Cruwys takes the frigate Miranda into a peacetime squadron, but coordinated corsair attacks armed with European weapons suggest that piracy is being used to conceal a wider contest for influence.
Cruwys follows the conspiracy from the Barbary Coast to Constantinople and Malta, moving among Ottoman officials, European diplomats and competing commercial interests. Success requires more than seamanship and gunnery: he must understand alliances that can change without warning and determine which apparent partners are directing the violence for their own political ends.
