Remember Me

by Lesley Pearse

First published 2003

4.4(11,862)

Mary Broad is condemned for theft in 1786 and transported from England with the First Fleet to the new penal settlement at Botany Bay. Under the conditions of colonial imprisonment, she marries William Bryant and tries to protect a family for whom hunger and official neglect are more immediate threats than the original sentence.

Mary and a small group of convicts escape in an open boat and attempt the extraordinary voyage north towards Dutch territory. Recapture returns her to Britain in chains, where public interest and James Boswell’s intervention offer a final possibility of freedom. The novel is based on the documented life of Mary Bryant, born Mary Broad.
