After the death of her mother Sally, Alice Kent is approached by Angus Tweedy, who claims to be her biological father and says that he was imprisoned for marrying Sally bigamously. The revelation contradicts everything Alice believed about her parents and about Ralph, the man who raised her.
From her position in 2015, Alice traces Sally’s life across the post-war decades, uncovering abuse, improvised identities, difficult relationships and lies used first for survival and later to protect the life Sally had built. The inquiry becomes less a search for a single secret than an attempt to judge a mother whose choices were shaped by fear and limited alternatives.
