Barbara Taylor Bradford

Barbara Taylor Bradford was a British-American novelist whose bestselling family sagas frequently explored ambition, social mobility, wealth and the creation of powerful business dynasties. Born in Leeds in 1933, she began her career at the Yorkshire Evening Post, progressing from typist to reporter and women’s-page editor while still in her teens. Her first novel, A Woman of Substance, was published in 1979 and introduced Emma Harte, an impoverished Yorkshire servant who builds an international retail empire. The novel sold more than 30 million copies and began an extended family saga following Emma’s descendants.

Bradford wrote forty novels, including the Emma Harte books, the Ravenscar Trilogy, the Cavendon series and the Victorian-set House of Falconer trilogy. Her stories commonly follow determined women and self-made entrepreneurs as they negotiate family loyalty, romance, betrayal and changes in British society across several generations. Her books sold more than 90 million copies worldwide, were translated into numerous languages and produced several television adaptations. Awarded an OBE for services to literature, Bradford continued writing until late in her life and died in New York in 2024.
