Ruby and Verity meet as children despite belonging to opposite sides of 1930s London. Verity is privately educated and secure in a Hampstead home, while Ruby is being raised in severe poverty. Their friendship gives each girl access to a world that would otherwise remain closed.
Economic collapse, family secrets and the approach of war reverse their apparent fortunes. Ruby rises while Verity suffers repeated losses, until a confrontation in 1938 breaks the bond between them. The novel follows the consequences of that separation into wartime Britain and asks whether loyalty can survive class resentment and betrayal.
