In 1950, Dulcie Taylor and her younger sister May are removed from their mother and placed in institutional care. Promised protection and a fresh start, they are instead selected for Britain’s child migration scheme and sent to Australia without the family knowledge or genuine consent that such a decision should require.
The sisters encounter separation, forced labour and abuse in institutions that publicly claim to be rescuing children. Dulcie’s friendship with Ross, another survivor, helps her resist the belief that every adult promise will end in betrayal. The novel draws on the documented experiences of post-war British child migrants.
