Miss Marple Mysteries

The Miss Marple mysteries centre on Jane Marple, an elderly resident of St Mary Mead whose knowledge of village behaviour gives her an unusually exact understanding of greed, vanity, fear and violence. Her investigations move from vicarages and country houses to hotels, Caribbean resorts and organised tours, but she repeatedly tests unfamiliar people against patterns she has observed at home.

The series also charts British social change from the interwar village to wartime disruption and post-war mobility. Domestic servants disappear, old houses become institutions or hotels, new wealth unsettles established hierarchies, and strangers move more freely through communities. Miss Marple’s apparent harmlessness allows her to listen closely while police and suspects underestimate both her memory and her moral resolve.
