After the death of Jason Rafiel, Miss Marple receives instructions to join a guided tour and investigate an unspecified injustice. The route, the other travellers and a visit to a house occupied by three elderly sisters gradually connect her assignment to a young woman’s murder and a man convicted of the crime.
With little initial evidence, Miss Marple relies on Rafiel’s confidence in her judgement and on the behaviour of people still protecting an old narrative. The novel uses the mobility of organised tourism and the persistence of post-war memory to examine grief, obsessive love and the moral duty to reopen a case when legal certainty may have concealed a deeper wrong.
