While holidaying on the Cornish coast, Poirot meets Nick Buckley, the young owner of the decaying End House, after a bullet narrowly misses her. She treats several recent accidents lightly, but Poirot becomes convinced that someone is repeatedly trying to kill her.
A house party, an inheritance and the arrival of Nick’s relatives and friends turn protection into a problem of motive and opportunity. The novel sets threatened old property against the leisure culture of the interwar seaside, and Poirot must separate genuine danger from the stories people create about vulnerability, romance and money.
