After Richard Abernethie’s funeral, his sister Cora casually remarks that he was murdered. The family dismisses her comment until Cora herself is killed, forcing solicitor Mr Entwhistle to examine relatives whose financial problems give each of them an interest in the estate.
Poirot enters the case through an assumed professional role and studies voices, habits, art and the way family members remember the dead. The post-war country-house setting exposes declining property, taxation and dependence on inheritance, while the investigation turns on the difference between a foolish remark and a deliberately planted idea.
