A young typist is sent to a house where she discovers a dead man surrounded by several clocks showing the same wrong time. The blind owner denies summoning her and the neighbours claim not to recognise the victim, leaving intelligence officer Colin Lamb to investigate both the murder and a separate espionage assignment.

Poirot advises from a distance and challenges the assumption that the conspicuous clocks must explain the crime. The novel joins a suburban murder to Cold War concerns about hidden agents, coded information and uncertain identity, using an ordinary street to show how international secrecy can inhabit apparently private lives.
