The wealthy Gordon Cloade is killed during an air raid, leaving no will and apparently transferring his fortune to his young widow Rosaleen. His dependent relatives, who had expected continued support, gather in the village of Warmsley Vale as rumours spread that Rosaleen’s first husband may still be alive.
A death at the local inn draws Poirot into questions of identity, blackmail and the economic dislocation left by war. The novel uses post-war shortages and declining family wealth to examine how people accustomed to dependence respond when privilege becomes uncertain and a single legal fact can redistribute an entire household’s future.
