Travelling west from Istanbul, Poirot joins the Orient Express shortly before heavy snow stops the train in Yugoslavia. An American passenger calling himself Ratchett is found stabbed in his locked compartment, and the remaining travellers offer conflicting evidence about a stranger seen in the corridor.
The investigation links an international group of passengers to the earlier kidnapping and murder of a child in the Armstrong family. Confined within the carriages, Poirot tests timetables, accents, clothing and private grief, while the famous train becomes a temporary society in which different classes and nationalities share both physical confinement and a concealed moral history.
