Thomas Paine was an English-born political writer whose pamphlets became influential arguments for American independence and republican government. Common Sense and The American Crisis supported the revolutionary cause, while Rights of Man and The Age of Reason placed him within the political and religious controversies of revolutionary France and the Atlantic world.
Paine arrived in the American colonies in 1774 and quickly became one of the Revolution’s most effective political polemicists. Returning to Europe, he defended the French Revolution in Rights of Man, was elected to the French National Convention and was later imprisoned during the Terror after opposing the execution of Louis XVI. His deist critique The Age of Reason brought further controversy, and he returned to the United States in 1802.
