Book
The Flag Captain
First published 1971
In 1797, Richard Bolitho brings the hundred-gun Euryalus home to serve as flagship of a squadron returning to the Mediterranean. As flag captain he must manage an inflexible admiral, a politically motivated civilian adviser and a fleet unsettled by the recent mutiny at Spithead.
Rumours of a larger uprising at the Nore follow the squadron to sea, making trust between officers and men as dangerous a question as the French enemy. Bolitho’s belief in fair treatment clashes with his admiral’s instincts until battle exposes the cost of command based on fear.
