Book
Beyond the Reef
First published 1992
In 1808, Richard Bolitho is ordered back to the Cape of Good Hope to establish a permanent naval command while Napoleon’s armies occupy Portugal and threaten Spain. Estranged from his wife and facing possible blindness, he travels with Catherine Somervell and several officers aboard the merchant ship Golden Plover.
Shipwreck on a remote reef off Africa turns the passage into a struggle for survival. With the survivors divided by fear, status and old resentments, Bolitho must create order without the authority or resources of a warship and find a route beyond the reef before exposure and violence destroy the remaining company.
