First published 1987
In 1804, Britain expects invasion by France and Spain, and Vice-Admiral Richard Bolitho returns to the restored Hyperion for a royal mission in the Caribbean. His failing marriage, damaged eyesight and memories of men lost aboard the ship make the command feel less like promotion than self-punishment.
Bolitho leads a raid against Spanish positions, captures a treasure ship and rediscovers Catherine Somervell in Antigua. The squadron then turns east towards Gibraltar and the fleet campaign of 1805, where Hyperion must fight through the actions leading to Trafalgar and pay the final cost of Bolitho’s pursuit of duty.
