Ramage and the Dido

by Dudley Pope Book 18 in the The Lord Ramage Novels series.

First published 1989

4.5(637)

Set in 1806, Ramage and the Dido gives Nicholas Ramage his largest command yet: HMS Dido, a seventy-four-gun ship of the line capable of overwhelming a frigate with a single broadside. The promotion is an honour, but it also demands that Ramage transform habits learned in smaller, more agile vessels into the command of a floating community with hundreds of men and immense firepower.

With many of his trusted Calypso sailors joining him, Ramage takes Dido to the West Indies, where French power around Martinique keeps the Caribbean war active. Pope makes the ship herself central to the story—her scale, discipline and tactical possibilities change what her captain can attempt. The final novel in the series therefore broadens Ramage's responsibilities while returning him to the island warfare that shaped several earlier commands.
