Set during the Battle of the Atlantic in the early years of the Second World War, Convoy follows Lieutenant Ned Yorke as Allied merchant shipping faces a disturbing problem: ships are being sunk from within convoys that should be protected by escorts against known U-boat tactics. The losses suggest that the Germans may know far more about convoy movements than the Royal Navy can explain.
Yorke's investigation becomes a naval intelligence hunt as suspicion falls on the organisation of the convoy itself and on a mysterious Swedish vessel moving through the same dangerous waters. Pope combines the physical strain of Atlantic escort work—weather, darkness, submarines and vulnerable merchantmen—with a puzzle about information and deception. The convoy system is both the setting and the problem: if its supposed safety can be penetrated, the supply line on which Britain depends is in danger.
