Ramage’s Mutiny

by Dudley Pope Book 8 in the The Lord Ramage Novels series.

First published 1977

4.5(702)

Set in 1799 in the Caribbean, Ramage's Mutiny begins after the crew of the British warship Jocasta mutinies and surrenders the vessel to Spain. For the Admiralty, the loss is both a military embarrassment and a challenge to authority; for Captain Nicholas Ramage, commanding the frigate Calypso, it becomes an order to recover Jocasta by whatever means can succeed.

The mission forces Ramage to deal with a ship now protected by the enemy and with the consequences of a British crew having deliberately carried her into Spanish hands. Surprise, reconnaissance and close action matter more than simple firepower. Pope uses the episode to explore the fragile relationship between discipline and command at a time when mutiny remained a recent memory across the Royal Navy, while the Caribbean war makes every captured ship potentially valuable to several competing powers.
