Set around 1660, as Charles II returns to the English throne, Admiral finds Ned Yorke with the chance to abandon the sea and recover the life of a wealthy planter. The Caribbean, however, remains an armed frontier. Spanish power still dominates much of the region, and beyond the formal reach of European treaties the Brethren of the Coast continue to fight, raid and bargain on their own terms.

When the scattered buccaneers ask Yorke to become their admiral, he must turn a volatile multinational fleet into an effective fighting force. His target is Portobelo, where Spanish treasure and powerful fortifications promise immense reward and almost certain destruction. The novel combines planning, naval command and land assault with the uneasy politics of English Jamaica, showing how restoration at home did little to end the private wars being fought across the Caribbean.
