Book
The Only Victor
First published 1990
In February 1806, Vice-Admiral Richard Bolitho arrives off southern Africa only months after Trafalgar and Nelson’s death. He is ordered to support the British expedition attempting to seize Cape Town from the Dutch, despite the belief among some officers that the great naval victory has already decided the war.
Bolitho knows that Napoleon remains undefeated and that operations far from Europe can still determine imperial control. Coordinating soldiers, ships and ambitious commanders, he leads his men into a campaign where strategic success cannot prevent the personal losses imposed by battle.
