The novel follows William of Normandy from his insecure childhood and struggle to control the duchy to his claim to the English crown. His marriage to Matilda of Flanders, rivalry with Harold Godwinson and determination to cross the Channel place dynastic ambition at the centre of the story.

Much of the action is seen through the fictional Norman knight Raoul de Harcourt, whose loyalty provides a closer view of William’s campaigns and court. The narrative culminates in the invasion of 1066 and the Battle of Hastings, treating the Norman Conquest as both military victory and personal transformation.
