Book
Powder and Patch
by Georgette Heyer · Book 5 in the Historical Romances series.
First published 1923
Philip Jettan is content with country life and expects to marry his neighbour Cleone Charteris, but she finds his plain manners and indifference to fashion disappointing. Stung by her rejection, Philip travels to Paris to acquire the polish, clothes and social confidence she believes a husband should possess.
He returns as an accomplished man of fashion and becomes the centre of attention he once avoided. Cleone must then decide whether she wanted Philip himself or merely the transformation she demanded, while Philip learns how easily refinement can become performance.
