Book
The Masqueraders
First published 1928
After the defeat of the Jacobite rising, Prudence and Robin Tremaine hide in London under exchanged identities: Prudence poses as a young gentleman and Robin as his sister. Their disguise protects them from arrest but places both inside a social world where any mistake could expose the family’s political past.
The siblings become involved in two romances while waiting for the return of their unpredictable father, whose plans are more ambitious than they expect. The novel uses cross-dressing, duels, abduction and disputed identity to turn post-rebellion danger into a fast-moving comedy of concealment.
