Battle of Culloden

The Battle of Culloden was fought on 16 April 1746 near Inverness between the Jacobite army of Charles Edward Stuart and government forces commanded by the Duke of Cumberland. It was the last pitched battle fought on British soil. The Jacobite army was defeated decisively.

Culloden mattered because it ended the rising of 1745 and destroyed the immediate military hopes of the Stuart cause. The government response brought executions, repression and measures aimed at breaking Highland military and social structures. The battle became both a political endpoint and a cultural wound.

Culloden appears powerfully in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander sequence and underlies much Jacobite historical fiction. D. K. Broster and Walter Scott also helped shape the literary memory of the doomed Stuart cause. For novels and series, Culloden offers last stands, divided families, fugitives, punishment, exile and the difficult survival of those left behind.
