Jacobite Risings

The Jacobite Risings were a series of attempts to restore the deposed Stuart dynasty after the Glorious Revolution. Although they began before the Georgian period, their most famous later phases directly challenged the Hanoverian monarchy. The risings drew support from parts of Scotland, Ireland, England and continental Europe.

Jacobitism combined dynastic loyalty, religious politics, local grievance and romanticised kingship. The failure of the rising of 1745 ended serious hopes of a Stuart restoration and changed Highland society profoundly. Repression, forfeited estates and cultural disruption followed the final defeat.

Jacobite fiction has a strong literary tradition, from Walter Scott’s Waverley to D. K. Broster’s Jacobite trilogy and Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series. These stories use divided loyalties, exile, clan politics and doomed causes as emotional engines. The period is especially strong for series built around family allegiance, secret correspondence, Highland landscapes and the aftermath of defeat.
