Historical person
John Graham, 1st Viscount Dundee
1648–1689
John Graham of Claverhouse was a Scottish soldier, royal officer and Jacobite commander known as Bonnie Dundee. He enforced royal policy against Covenanters and led the Jacobite rising of 1689 until his death at Killiecrankie.
Graham served the Stuart monarchy in Scotland and became a leading Jacobite commander after the Revolution of 1688; he won a dramatic victory at Killiecrankie in 1689 but was mortally wounded in the battle.
In Rosemary Sutcliff’s Bonnie Dundee, Hugh follows Claverhouse into the Highland campaign that culminates at Killiecrankie, where victory is inseparable from the death of the commander remembered as Bonnie Dundee.
