Bonnie Dundee

Scotland, in the years of the persecuted Covenanters. Hugh Herriot comes from a Covenanting background but enters the household of John Graham of Claverhouse, serving first in the stables and later as one of the officer’s mounted messengers. Through Hugh, the novel presents Claverhouse as a disciplined soldier whose duty to the Stuart crown places him against communities from which his own servant has come.

The political crisis of 1688 turns the earlier struggle over worship and royal authority into open Jacobite war. Hugh follows Claverhouse into the Highland campaign that culminates at Killiecrankie, where victory is inseparable from the death of the commander remembered as Bonnie Dundee. The story allows admiration for courage and personal loyalty without concealing the repression, divided convictions and human cost on both sides.
