Battle of Killiecrankie
27 July 1689
At Killiecrankie a Jacobite army led by John Graham of Claverhouse attacked government forces under Hugh Mackay. The Highland charge broke Mackay’s line and produced a striking tactical victory.
Claverhouse was mortally wounded during the action. His death deprived the rising of its most effective commander, and the Jacobite victory did not translate into strategic success.
The battle forms the climax of Rosemary Sutcliff’s Bonnie Dundee, where loyalty to Claverhouse is tested against the divided religious and political commitments of Scotland.
