Jacobite Rising of 1689

The deposition of James VII and II in 1688 divided Scotland over monarchy, religion and political legitimacy. John Graham of Claverhouse raised a Jacobite force in the Highlands on behalf of the exiled king.

The rising won a dramatic victory at Killiecrankie but lost Claverhouse in the battle. Later defeats and the dispersal of the army prevented the movement from overturning the new settlement, though Jacobitism remained a major force for decades.
