Frank Osbaldistone rejects his father’s London trading house and is sent to live among his Jacobite relatives in Northumberland. There he falls in love with Diana Vernon and distrusts his calculating cousin Rashleigh, who takes Frank’s place in the family business. When Rashleigh steals documents capable of ruining the firm and carries them into Scotland, Frank follows with the Glasgow merchant Bailie Nicol Jarvie.

Their search brings them into the Highlands and into the protection of Rob Roy MacGregor, outlaw, cattle dealer and political intermediary. The financial conspiracy unfolds as the Jacobite Rising of 1715 begins, linking private credit and inheritance to a wider challenge against the Hanoverian succession. Frank must recover his father’s property, survive Rashleigh’s betrayal and decide whether Diana’s family commitments leave any future for them together.
