Charles Radcliffe, younger brother of James Radcliffe, Earl of Derwentwater, is drawn into the Jacobite Rising of 1715 despite the secret marriage and daughter he has tried to hide. The rebellion fails, James is executed and Charles escapes from Newgate, beginning years of exile and renewed commitment to the Stuart cause.
The story also follows Charles’s daughter Jenny, whose search for family and belonging carries her from Northumberland into colonial Virginia and the world of William Byrd’s plantation. Set against the risings of 1715 and 1745, the novel examines inherited loyalty, religious division and the cost paid by families whose private lives become entangled with a lost political cause.
