Foxfire

In 1933, sheltered New York socialite Amanda Lawrence meets Jonathan Dartland, a mining engineer of Apache ancestry, while returning from Europe. Their swift marriage takes her to the struggling Arizona mining town of Lodestone, where poverty, isolation and prejudice replace the comfortable life she expected.

Jonathan’s conflict with the mine management and Amanda’s difficulty adapting put their marriage under increasing strain. When an Apache story about a lost gold mine offers the possibility of escape, Amanda becomes consumed by the search, turning the novel into both a desert adventure and an examination of marriage, cultural identity and economic desperation during the Great Depression.
