The Turquoise

Born in Santa Fe in 1850 to a Spanish mother and Scottish father, Fey Cameron is orphaned young and raised in poverty. A Navajo medicine man recognises her second sight and gives her a turquoise talisman, but at seventeen she rejects the limits of her New Mexico childhood and leaves with the travelling performer Terry Dillon.

Fey’s journey through the Colorado frontier to New York becomes a determined ascent into wealth and society after Terry abandons her. Marriage to financier Simeon Tower gives her the position she craves, yet the return of her first husband and the pull of the Southwest force her to confront what ambition has cost and whether the talisman’s warning can still be escaped.
