His fortunes take him between Scotland and France, where military service and his parents’ troubled past bring him into the orbit of the exiled Jacobite court. By the time Charles Edward Stuart launches his attempt to recover the British throne, Ronald is ready to join the rising.
The novel follows the campaign from its early optimism to the disaster at Culloden, while also drawing on the wider European war in which Jacobite hopes were entangled with French policy. Ronald’s adventures place personal loyalty, family honour and survival alongside the decisions of Charles Edward Stuart and the government forces that ultimately crush the rebellion.
