Reign of Louis XI

Louis XI inherited a kingdom recovering from the Hundred Years’ War but still challenged by powerful nobles. He relied on diplomacy, taxation, officials of modest birth and carefully chosen alliances to expand royal authority. His principal rivalry was with Charles the Bold of Burgundy.

The king’s methods earned him a reputation for secrecy, manipulation and political patience. During his reign Burgundy’s power collapsed, Picardy was secured and the crown moved closer to controlling much of the territory associated with modern France. Royal justice and administration nevertheless remained uneven at local level.

Louis XI appears directly in Victor Hugo’s Notre-Dame de Paris, whose action takes place in 1482, and in Walter Scott’s Quentin Durward. Fiction often uses his reign for court intrigue, spies, conflict between monarchy and great nobles, and the contrast between growing state authority and the disorder of the medieval city.
