Richard I was seized in Europe on his return from the Third Crusade and handed over to Emperor Henry VI. His captivity placed the English crown and Angevin territories under severe pressure while an enormous ransom was negotiated.

The crisis mattered because absence exposed the ambitions of John and Philip II of France while increasing Eleanor of Aquitaine’s political importance. Raising the ransom required administrative effort, taxation and loyalty across a scattered realm.
